Another boring day at the castle full of magical beings, classes were just dreadful to deal with after the summer just ended. The classes were not difficult at all, in fact James would be unable to tell anyone about the classes. He skipped all of them for the chance to go swimming at the black lake by himself. It was unlike him to skip out on classes that his three fellow marauders attended. However, he wanted the day to himself after dealing with the drama that was the Black family over the summer. James was distantly related to the Black family, but he had the pleasure of never dealing with any of them personally. The only one that he had the pleasure of truly knowing was Sirius Black, his best friend. Sure, he had met some of the Blacks in school, but he did not have to acknowledge them as being family. The ones that had to answer to Walburga would be his parents, Dorea and Charlus Potter. Both of whom kept their muggle views to themselves, in fear of losing their opportunities as purebloods. That being their fortune that was inherited through generations of the Black family. Walburga had a habit of sending howlers, ashamed that the Potters took in her traitor son, Sirius. James thought it was quite pointless to hide the fact that they supported muggleborns being at Hogwarts. After all, the screaming banshee known as Walburga was already going bonkers about them. However, it was none of his business. Atleast, it wouldn't be when he finished his last two years of Hogwarts and moved out. His relationship with his parents was always a close relationship, but just like any teenager, he had his moments of wanting to get out. They spoiled him with anything that he wanted since he was considered a treasure to them. By treasure, this meant that the two had tried for a child for a long time. They finally managed to have James after many tries which included trying with the help of magic. The swim at the black lake was to clear his thoughts. It wasn't like him to want to do that, but he was starting to realize living the high life of being rich, wasn't exactly what he wanted in his later life. It was good now to have the gold, anything he wanted. Though it wasn't going to be much help to him, if he wanted to keep a good impression when adulthood would start to kick in. The weather at the lake was beautiful, considering it was no longer summer. The sky was a slight gray indicating a storm was on it's way. Fall leaves laid on the sand of the black lake, withering away in size, preparing to die for the eventual winter to approach. Dark blue water remained calm in the lake for now, the storm would certainly unsettle the water. James sat on the pier of the boathouse with his feet dangling in the water, looking out at the water. He was deep in thought about the past summer, not too worried about the possible storm coming. Certainly, he wanted to take another swim or even use a boat in the lake. However, it'd be quite boring to take the adventure in a storm alone. What he didn't know, was that a head full of blazing red hair was walking her way down to the boathouse. The wind was starting to pick up a bit, but again the weather was beautiful. Why? It wasn't hot as hades outside, plus it was peaceful for now. The blazing red haired girl was bound to cause some chaotic noise considering the two were always shooting comments to each other. Comments that just bounced back and forth, not really comments that were meant to be friendly nor rude. Just comments that perhaps had a hidden meaning behind them. Not that he would know, maybe the merpeople had a better chance of figuring the two out.

Lily felt like these classes were going to last the entire day, which didn't really help hold her attention. In fact, she had woken up late this morning, which was very unlike her. Still, she was up a half hour before anyone was moving in her dorm. At breakfast, she sat with her sister, talking about pointless things to make conversation. Once class actually began, she was surprised to see that James was nowhere to be seen. The professor made note of it, too, so Lily decided that she'd lie and say he was in the hospital wing ill. He friends looked grateful and she was sure that they couldn't afford for him to miss the first quidditch game of the year. Tucking a stray strand of hair behind her ear, she began taking notes and trying to immerse herself in today's lessons. On her way to her next class, Lily stopped by the Hospital Wing, pretending that she had a migraine and needed to be excused for the rest of the day. The nurse always seemed to like Lily, especially since she was interested in healing. She insisted that she didn't need to write her name on the excuse, stating that she was going to go to the classrooms now and get her work. The nurse believed her and handed her the note without a second thought. Lily figured that she should feel bad about taking advantage of someone's generosity, but she didn't, really. Why was she doing this for James Potter in the first place? Lily had gotten close to the group of boys after her friendship with Severus had became dismal. She felt like she owed him this, at least.
Walking back to her dorm for the day was a welcoming feeling. She didn't exactly hate classes, but it felt good to have a little break. After chatting in the common room for a bit, Lily wandered up to the boys dorm, asking around for James. She was informed by a few boys that he skipped classes to go swimming in the lake. "What a boyish thing to do," she thought to herself. Lily went back to her dorm, changing into some comfortable clothes to wear outside. She had noticed that it was hot out, but it also looked like it was going to storm. She really didn't want to get caught out in that, so she hoped that this would be a short trip. She and James certainly had an odd friendship. They were always bickering and picking on each other and they probably seemed like they hated each other to anyone that didn't know them. But in fact, it was quite the opposite. Lily actually enjoyed his company and their trivial conversations. The only thing she didn't enjoy was him acting like a twelve year old instead of a sixteen year old. He didn't always like that, and the times they actually had normal conversations, she loved them. She believed that if he acted like that all the time, that she could like him more than a friend. But she didn't know when or if that would ever happen. And it didn't do to dwell on such things, so she always took it one day at a time. Maybe he'd actually be civil to her today. Who knows.
It was about a ten minute walk on the castle grounds to reach the lake. When the boathouse was actually in sight, she picked up her pace a little bit, making sure not to step in any hidden divots in the ground. It was definitely more breezy by the water- her hair whipping around her face furiously. Taking the elastic band off of her wrist, she tied her hair in a messy bun. Entering the boathouse, she walked cautiously through the building. "James?" she called before walking around a corner, spotting him. "Oh, there you are. I hope you know that I saved your ass in class today." she said, holding out in front of her the note from the nurse she had obtained. Sitting down, she brought her knees up to her chest, looking out over the lake. Now she could see the storm rolling in from the West. She was pretty positive at this point that she wasn't going to be leaving here before it hit. She pouted a bit at the thought, but what could she really do about it? For all she knew, this had all just worked in James' favor, and that irked her. "Now I see why you wanted to skip classes. In fact, I'm a little bit jealous. They were terribly boring without you there to blow something up." Lily eyed the boat, remembering the first time she came to Hogwarts. She thought that the enchanted boats were the most amazing things back then. Now, she knew that it was just a simple enchantment. Glancing back at James, she wondered how long he had been down here or if any of the staff had found him. Looking back down at her feet, she untied her shoes and took them (and her socks) off and dipped her toes in the water- praying that something below its murky waters wouldn't nibble.

Classes were the last thing that James wanted to deal with, especially given the fact that they were always boring on the first day. He had picked a good selection of classes for his sixth year. It was great to be able to avoid potions for the rest of his schooling though it meant the dream of being an auror was done. Easily, he could walk to the headmaster, requesting for the class. Though he did not do so well on his OWL when really he did. Professor Slughorn was someone that was a bit lenient with OWLs in potions unlike some former professors that taught potions. If he could not achieve the goal of being an auror, he could at least end up in quidditch. Quidditch captain did not happen for him over the summer, but it was not a big deal. A lot of people predicted him to get it for his seventh and final year of Hogwarts. His quidditch skills were something that enabled the team to achieve a lot. As a chaser, he made sure to rack up as much points as possible. The reason for this was that the snitch would only be worth so much during a lengthy game. A lengthy game meaning that it lasted for a while, resulting in the chasers having to make sure their team was leading in points no matter what. James also was the type of chaser that despite popular belief, did not show off during the game. Some chasers loved to show off to the crowd which he used to do when he was younger. However, he changed this around during his forth year because he wanted to remain focused on the game. There was plenty of time for showing off in practice or after the game. For this, people considered him a pretty good natural flier meaning he has instincts as to what is best for his game and team. So, being a professional quidditch player would always be a second option.
If there was something that he missed about the classes, it was a certain girl. Sure, he did not get the chance to hangout with his friends. However, his feelings for a girl had begun last year. It was last year that Severus Snape made one of his gravest mistakes with the red haired girl. One day, James had hexed Snape to the point that he was hanging upside in front of a huge group of people. It was the usual routine for James to hex Snape, given the fact that they had been bitter enemies since their first years. James had heard Snape attempting to use the hex on someone else, so he decided to use it on Snivellus. Snape was a bit irritated with James using his own spell against him. Lily was the one that rushed to defend Snape, causing James to leave Snape alone. However, it was Lily that paid the cost dearly. As Snape was rambling on in front of a laughing crowd, he felt his dignity was being ripped apart. It was then that Snape said the word that not many people were fans of. Mudblood. James had already left the two alone with the crowd by then, so he was not there to witness Snape saying the word. It was later on, in the common room that he would be told the story of how Snape said the word. That night, it was just James and Lily in the common room since the others had gone to their dorms by then. James had been looking at the marauders' map when she came bursting into the common room. Her face was a bit red meaning that she potentially spent some time crying. That was when she told him about what Snape had said to her. It was also that night, that the two realized that they could actually handle a normal conversation. Since that night, feelings were definitely developed for her. Despite what happened that night, the two have kept up with the small arguments that make people believe that they hate each other. That has been a lie though, with her being seen with the marauders quite a bit. James hadn't told any of his three friends about the developing feelings for her just yet.
James took out the marauder's map, deciding to spy on whoever was in the castle. It was his resource to everything, the map. Opportunities of running into people by accident, presented themselves on the map. Some people did not understand how he could run into them so many times a day. Especially Lily. It was also his map to keeping a social life alive in the castle, enabling him to find certain people to build better friendships with. Along with people to avoid such as Snivellus unless it involved making him float upside down for a while. The pier that James sat at, there was an open roof meaning that if it started pouring down, he'd end up soaked. It was the best spot in the boathouse to sit. The map showed footprints of Ms. Evans approaching the boathouse, in fact she was in the boathouse. A bit of surprise considering she probably had classes and homework to tend to. Her voice called out, saying his name. James turned slightly to look at her as she said that she saved his arse in class today. He smirked and said, "You've been hanging around us marauders too much, getting notes from the nurse when you're not sick..." His voice wandered off cause he was very tempted to bring up her red hair causing her illness. It was something that he made fun of her for quite a bit. Her red hair though really it was the best part about her cause it made her green eyes stand out so much. Lily sat down next to him, looking out over the lake. It wasn't in the cards for them both to be caught sitting next to each other on the pier, looking at the lake right? She spoke again before he could say anything, bringing up the fact that he wasn't in class to blow something up. James said, "Sorry for not being your entertainment today, I'll make it up tomorrow when I turn a rat into a pocket watch mixed with rat in transfiguration." Obviously, he did mistakes in transfiguration on purpose. It was his best subject out of everything given the fact that he became an animagus last year. He did mistakes on purpose in the class to enable some laughs out of the class. The map was still in his hands, showing the footsteps of Severus Snape in the fifth floor corridor. It was quite tempting to really get him back for what he did to Lily. However, James had been convinced by Lily to completely avoid him. That never happened when it came to hexing, but he held off on the hook nosed boy. It seemed just as Lily put her feet into the water, the clouds had a switch. All of a sudden, it started to rain. Not badly, but it was bound to get worst. Luckily for the map, it was charmed to endure water compared to normal parchment. James' eyes wandered from the map to Lily though went to looking at the lake. Staring at her wasn't something he wanted to get caught doing. Especially when the attention would probably turn to Severus Snape, whom was on the map that he had yet to put away. Maybe, it was out of hope that Snape would not come outside to find the two.

Lily groaned inwardly, hearing her two groups of friends bickering again. She was the peacekeeper in the group, always separating the Marauders from Severus and Petunia. This time, however, James had been hexing Sev so consistently that he was literally hanging upside under a tree. Lily rolled her eyes, pushing her way through a group of laughing students, resisting the urge to grab James by the collar of his shirt and scream at him. Instead, she finally made her way to the front of the group, yelling at him to stop and leave him alone. James stopped the hex, stepping back so that Lily could help Severus up. The Marauders had began to retreat through the crowd, getting claps on the back and little cheers. No one really like Severus and Lily couldn't see why not. She had known him the majority of her life, had spent so much time with him. He knew her better than anyone else- all of her secrets and quirks. But when she knelt down to help him sit up straight, he pulled away from her like he had been burned. Lily stood up immediately, obviously a little hurt by his reaction to her. That's when he stormed off and started shoving through the crowd. Lily stared after him, shocked, for a moment before following after him; calling his name. It was then that he turned around to face her, stopping in his tracks. If she hadn't of been paying attention, she would have ran right into his chest. She wasn't sure what else he had been saying, but she heard the only word she needed to: "...Mudblood!" It was her turn to take a few steps back, tears starting to blur her vision. That was the worst word he could have ever called her. Lily turned away from him, walking quickly back to the castle. She just wanted away from everyone. Leaning against the wall by the portrait, she wiped at her eyes furiously, trying to calm herself. She had already been stared at like she was some kind of creature walking through the castle. Whispering the password, she entered the common room, pleased that there was no one up. That is, until she spotted James Potter. Lily wandered over, sitting next to him and decided to tell him what had happened after he left. It was then that she discovered that she could have serious conversations with him. She knew that if she ever needed to talk to him about anything important, that she could.
Hearing his replies to her snarky little comments made her grin, but she never turned to look at him. She was deep in thought...about him...and she just couldn't bring herself to do it. It was raining now pretty steadily, so, Lily reached up and took her long hair out of the ponytail. She figured she was going to be drenched pretty soon, now, anyway. Glancing back at him, she noticed the map in his hands. It was a recent discovery of hers and she thought it was brilliant. She'd never give him such high praise openly, though. When she saw Severus' little name walking around, she frowned slightly. Lily diverted her gaze back to her feet, saying, "He said it again..." She didn't need to say more. She sighed, remember the encounter. It wasn't aimed towards her, but it still hurt that he was still throwing the word around in front of his new friends. She felt like his humanity was just slipping away and that there was nothing she could do about. Of course, whether she told James and the guys this, she was still planning on talking some sense into Severus. She couldn't just sit back and watch him self destruct. Lily sighed, then, mumbling, "I just don't know what to do. I feel like I'm not good enough for anyone. For friends or otherwise. And it makes me feel weak that I'm even thinking about all of this." She stood up, then, moving away from him. She was pretty sure that her tank top was see through at this point, but what could she really do about it? Lily walked over to a boat, stepping in and sitting down. "So, are we going out in this thing, or what? I'm already drenched. There's no point in trying to stay dry, now." She smirked, trying to brush what she had said earlier under the table. She felt bad. He always seemed to be around when she needed to complain. Although, her version of complaining is really that she just needs someone to talk to. Someone she trusts. And she had that in him, she knew she did.

The memory of what Snape had said to Lily was an interesting memory for James to think about. He knew that the two had grown up, living next to each other. It was why the two were inseperable friends. Their first year, some distance had grown between the two due to their house differences. Despite the house differences, Lily always seemed to come to Severus' rescue. James couldn't understand their friendship at first until Snape called Lily, a mudblood. It showed how much she valued their friendship, the feelings of being hurt by him. If James ever wanted to give Snape any advice, it would have been to change his ways. To stop hanging around the group of slytherins that he did. Also, to stop using the word 'mudblood', it was hurtful towards the one friend that had always stuck by his side. Anyone that had seen Snape as often as James did, could tell that he perhaps cared a lot for Lily. However, the pressure of trying to have some kind of friends were perhaps causing him to act without thinking first. It was Snape's loss to give up Lily over trying to impress others with using a disgraceful word. That night spent in the common room allowed Lily to perhaps see a side of James that she thought that she'd probably never see. The fact that he could handle a serious conversation with her. He offered her advice on the whole situation though it was never his full idea of her breaking apart her friendship from Snape. Originally, he suggested that the two talk about where their friendship stood and if it would be worth continuing it. With the talk, he hoped that perhaps Lily would realize that it would not be worth staying friends with Snape. Not due to his hatred for Snape, but the fact that he did not want to see this become a common thing in their friendship. For Snape to accidentally call her, a 'mudblood' and for her to end up in tears. James took some blame for the incident as well since if he had not hexed Snape, perhaps everything would have been fine with the two. If anything showed that James was a good person deep down, it would be the fact that he admitted that it was somewhat his fault that she was upset.
The rain was pouring down, meaning that soon the two would both be soaked from it. Luckily for him, he was wearing an orange and black jacket that would keep the map safe after he put it away. Just as she brought up the topic of Snape, he muttered 'mischief managed' with his wand on the parchment. With those two words said, the parchment became blank once again. James heard her mention that Snape said it again. His mind instantly thought to hex Snape in the slytherin common room, risking getting hexed himself. It'd be tricky to get into the slytherin common room due to it having a password, but it would be worth it. His dark eyes stayed looking out at the lake, not a word heard from him. That being because he knew that she had more on her mind. It happened before in their previous conversation. She started telling him about Severus and whenever he would try to say something, she'd interrupt his sentence. So before, he let her fully rant before saying anything else. It was understandable because she was upset at someone that she had so much history with. Lily continued talking about how she wasn't sure if she was good enough for anyone. Then she stood up, walking over to the boat and sitting down in it. She asked if they were going to go out in the boat in the lake. James finally stood up, following after her to the boat. Two things were on his mind. One, her tank top was see through though he wasn't going to comment on that. Not if he didn't want to deal with the wrath of a ginger with fiery red hair. Two, he had some thoughts about the whole Snape situation. James said, "If we end up drowning, it's all your fault, Ms. Evans." He said that because whenever they were together, they'd sometimes bicker. Some people were waiting for the day that she would hex him into oblivion. He sat down in the boat, untying the boat from the pier before moving the two paddles in the water. The boat was one of the newer ones that the school had managed to get. There was also the option of using the paddles or magic, but James preferred doing some things with no magic. Paddling a boat was no problem for him, considering he visited the lake quite often. The boat moved forward away from the boathouse, going further out on the lake. James finally said, "I understand that Snape is your friend, but if he is going to keep throwing a word that disrespects you then you should just let him go. He's making you feel as if you aren't good enough for anyone when really you are." Those last words were probably a bit too revealing of how much James perhaps cared for her. He hated seeing her like this, feeling weak because of a hateful word. James said, "I suggest perhaps one talk with him to figure out what is going on with him, but don't become his most trusted friend again. I believe Tom Riddle has already taken that spot.." Tom Riddle was someone that James did not trust at all. He felt as if something was just not right about the guy. Finished with talking, he took off the black rimmed glasses that he had been wearing since they were getting splattered with water. His eyesight was once very good to the point that he did not need glasses, but the sight in his eyes eventually decreased resulting in glasses. James awaited the response from Lily, who looked just as beautiful despite being soaked from the rain. Most people looked and smelled like wet dogs after being in the rain. Or at least James got that assumption from living with Sirius for the past year.

Sitting in a boat in the pouring rain with one of the biggest troublemakers in Hogwarts would raise a red flag for many people. For Lily, however, it was just another walk in the park. She had been around these boys so much lately that they were rubbing off on her entirely. Lily didn't really expect James to respond immediately to what she had just said previously. She knew that it angered him, but she felt the need to tell him, like it was necessary to get his advice. Again, it came down to this odd connection between them that she had been trying to avoid these past few months as it intensified. Instead, here she sat, her hair hanging limply around her shoulders; looking much more auburn than red. She smiled at his comment about them potentially drowning because of her. Lily smirked and replied, "If we drown, it's not going to be because of me. I'm a lifeguard every summer holiday. If we die, rest assured, it's because of you." She actually saved a kid from drowning last summer. Not that she liked to brag or anything. When James started rowing the boat out onto the lake, Lily's thoughts immediately went to them getting caught. If someone saw them, they were done for. She hadn't received a detention this far during her time at Hogwarts and she didn't want to get her first one today. But she had to admit that this was fun. It was totally outside of her personality to do something this...adventurous...and rule breaking. Technically, they could expel them for this, but she was pretty sure that James didn't care about that. She figured if someone did catch them, that it was more likely to be another student.
When James began talking about Sev again, her attention turned entirely to him again. She didn't like feeling like she was less than human and when he called her a mudblood, that's what happened. What a terrible word. She could hardly even think about the incident now without getting angry or upset. Luckily today, she could put the tears to the side. She wouldn't put James through seeing her cry again. However, it was the end of his statement that really made her look at him. "He's making you feel as if you aren't good enough for anyone when really you are." Honestly, she didn't even pay attention to the second part of what he said. She was just staring at him like he had just spoke a revelation...which he had, to her. She didn't mean to interrupt him, but she was pretty positive that she had entirely. She even thought that she might have bumped one of the oars into the lake when she was steadying herself to move to sit on his lap- placing her hands on either side of his face to kiss him. It was slow at first, she even pulled back and leaned her forehead against his for a moment. But when he didn't protest, she moved in again, kissing him deeper. She felt like such a girl; butterflies and all. Maybe she shouldn't have acted to impulsively, but seeing him in the rain, saying that she was good enough for him (more or less), she decided to act. She didn't regret it, either.
After a minute, Lily pulled away, smiling like an idiot...at least, she thought she was. She figured that he'd need a few moments to recover from her pouncing. And after thoughtful consideration, Lily figured that she was already wet and that her bra and bikini briefs were pretty much just like a bikini- so why not strip the other layers? And that's just what she did without giving it a second thought. Standing up, she reached for her shorts, wriggling out of them. Her tank top was next, pulling it over her head quickly and into the water she went. The water was much cooler than it felt on the surface, but it was refreshing. She figured she'd get out if her lips started to turn blue (probably much to James' horror). She had just down two more incredibly out of character things, She had attacked James' mouth with her own and stripped in front of him to go swimming. He was definitely rubbing off on her. "If the merpeople grab my legs, just remember that I wasn't the one responsible for their death." She smiled, noticing that she effectively changed the subject again from what she had just done. She wasn't sure how he was going to act towards her after what she had done so suddenly and abruptly. To say that she was nervous would be a severe understatement. Swimming back over to the boat, she gripped the edge and pushed herself back in- sitting across from him with her arms crossed. The rain was still coming down in buckets and the sun had began to set. If he was weird around from here on out, she was going to be pissed.
